familiar names
Having lived in Maplewood all of my life, from 1931 until we moved to Az in 1993, I saw familiar names in the guest book.I grew up on St. Lawrence and played behind Gefken's when it was just a big field.Much more fun than as a park. After marrying we moved to Woodland Rd at#30 and#42 and after that to 20 Durand.(If Mary Beth Carney reads this,I went to Dr. Schweikhardt as a kid and bought the house when Angie moved to Fla.) That was a great house, and after 13 years there retired to AZ.Could'nt have had a better place to grow up and live in.If I can help anyone with answers to questions I would be glad to try

Reply to "do you remember?
Hi, I lived on Edgewood Place in Maplewood from 1975-1980 Angela, was your Mom known as "Mrs. C"? if so I remember her well. I worked in the cafe during study period while at MJHS. All of the Ladies who worked in the cafe were very nice to us students. We had great cafe food at MJHS. I often think about old class mates and friends from back in the day. I still have family in Maplewood and it is always nice to get back to visit.

Amazing blog about a Maplewood Native
You all need to read this amazing blog. I cried my eyes out reading their story. It is about Bobby Bianchi, he was born and raised in Maplewood. When I was done I wanted to learn more about him and where he was from. Which is how I found this web site. It is a great story, she needs to make it a book or a movie. All I can say, have the kleenex ready. Put the word out maybe if enough people tell her, she will write a book. Nicholas Sparks has nothing on this story.

I loved growing up in Maplewood!
I also have so many memories of growing up in Maplewood. I lived on Ridgewood Road. I started at Jefferson School, so many memories of skateboarding down the sidewalks, playing on the playground. Then so many years walking to the Jr. High and stopping at the stationary store for candy along the way. My first job was at Baskin Robbins, I'm not even sure if it's still there. Movies in the park were also another favorite. What I loved was being able to walk to everywhere. I'd walk from home all the way across town to go to the community pool. I'd tan all summer, going to the snack bar. Then of course there was high school. It was full of first loves, battle of the bands, walks through town and winter skates in the park. Maplewood is a beautiful town. I was married at Morrow Memorial. Maplewood has so many beautiful stone schools and churches. Nothing like where I am now in North Carolina. Everything is new construction. For those that grew up in Maplewood it can sound like a fairy tale when you tell your friends today, doesn't it? I bring my family back every once in a while and we always go to the roman gourmet for pizza and take the train to NY! What fun was that easy access to fun and excitement in the city! Thanks for putting up this site to be able to share!

Library Clock
Maplewood Village, 1969,we changed the time on all four sides of the clock on the library, put a Mickey Mouse face behind the hands, and put gloves on the clock hands, getting off the roof was harder than getting up: Rick Saul, Dave Ripley, Mark Gergley

The Best Place to Grow Up
I spent my early years in Maplewood and can't think of a better place to be. My father lived there most of his life. My grandparents lived on 20 Durand almost across from the train station. I glad to know so many others feel the same way!

The BEST hometown
Lived at 16 Ridgewood Terrace in a house my Grandfather had built in 1906. Still have great memories of Maplewood (sledding down the sidewalks, snow forts, ice skating on the town park ice, THE best 4th of July fireworks shows ever. Moved away in the early 70's but always kept Maplewood in my heart. Enjoyed this site!

Best memories!
What a wonderful, magical "village". Went to Jefferson Grade School, and MJH. Lived a few houses from the train station so took the "path to school". Later lived on Walton Rd. Remember a world where you could walk everywhere. Going to the Village to the movies, to ice skate in the park; to a dance at the community center, the library. I loved the 4th of July with the giant flag of fireworks. Skateboarding down the big hill and looking for the Beatles limo. Mr. Schmidt who taught science at MJH. Friends I've lost touch with Sue Socci, Carrie Faupel,Leslie Arnold,Dennis Siderko, Charlie Rich, Dave Ripley, and Sue Hunter I have talked to. The best. Moved away in 1966 and cried all the way to Texas.

help us remember!!!
Several of us are trying to remember the name of a band that practiced on Tuscan Rd and Prospect, across from the church. It was around 1965, and they sounded similar to The Turtles. They did have a song on the radio. Does anyone remember the name of the band?? Email me at luckystar1952 @comcast.net if you remember. Please help before we go nuts! Thanks!

Best 4th of July anywhere
Whenever the 4th arrives, my memories go straight back to Maplewood celebration. First the morning races, then the parade, then the circus/show, followed in the evening with a concert, then the fireworks. An all day affair and one that is so memorable. Hope Maplewood is still doing that. Thanks for staying the same great town. Denise Gallo Shortway

Generations Ago
I lived in Maplewood until 1971 when we moved south to Atlanta. But, my father lived in Maplewood from the time he was five. He went to St. Benedicts & Oratory. I went to Jefferson and lived on Jefferson Ave and then 33 Mountain Ave.I remember walking to school, the 4h of July, walking to the Village, ice skating. We always felt safe and happy. The worst that could happen was getting hit by a snowball in the winter or getting to school after the third bell rang. Mr. Knopf was the principal, but was always so nice to me. After we moved, we visited my grandmother in the summers. She lived at 20 Durand Rd. When she moved away there was no reason to visit. But, I'd move back in a heartbeat if I could. It's the best place I could ever think of living! Those of you who live there are lucky. Enjoy!

Best Time of My Life
I grew up in Maplewood, my father grew up here too. My grandparents lived at 20 Durand Rd. It was absolutely the happiest part of my life. We moved away in 1971, but I'd love to move back and raise my daughter there. The 4th of July, Dickens Village, Barclay lessons, and hanging out at Baskin Robbins were memories I'll always cherish! We lived on Mountain Ave and walked to Jefferson. It was great to walk with my buds!

Just came across your great web site. I lived on Hughes St for many years. Does anyone remember my mom, Enes Cordasco? She was a cook at Maplewood Jr. High for many years. I think some of you still owe her the money she lent you for lunch! Mu dad, Jerry, was the manager of the store across from the high school which at the tiem was an A&P.. Some of you guys out there may have worked for him. My brother, Anthony Cordasco, taught shop at Columbia HS for a while. My youngest brother,Jerry,is still a Maplewood resident. It's fun to remember!

Memories a Million
Hi! I moved to 624 Valley St. When I was knee hi to a grasshopper. It was Spring i believe. I remember everything looked so beautiful and green. The big tree on our lawn that sprawled over valley St. and our lawn. Countless times we sat out there enjoying the shady tree and watchin the cars pass by. i went to Tuscan, Maplewood Middle and Columbia High. I had my sister and brother, Mom and Dad and our dog Fluffy. As zi grew up I enjoyed the park very day right across from my house off Baker St. Tennis, raquet ball, the swings and in the winter the froze over pond for skating. I ended up working in the Movie house for over three years. Next door was the Roman Gourmet (deliciously made pizza). A beautifully quaint towne with good people. I could hear the train come thru when id ly in my bed. Hot summer night wed go to Baskin Robbins 31 flavors. In Maplewood Middle I fell in Love with Joe Lidoski. i never stopped! My Dad was in the Lions Club and worked as a Plumber in Jersey City. My Mom was on PTA and a community bowling league. They were fine parents. Both working together to make our lives comfortable and most memorable. I absolutely adored Maplewood. The four seasons, the fireworks and July 4th park events, BBQ'ing with family, the community pool, the village and all the cute little shops. countless fond memories fill my heart and soul. Its a place i long for in my dreams. When my dad took ill with Cancer our family fell a part. He died in '81 and nothing seemed the same for my family. In my heart is my family, now my children here in Plam bay where I presently reside and some good friends, teachers, co workers that ill never forget. My love for Joe still goes on. He had to leave in '75 and Ive casrried a torch for him all this time. I just recently found him after years of not having any luck. Maplewood...I love you!!! Forever youll burn brightly in my spirit like a warm wonderfull flame.

Still live here
Grew up on Highland Place and then Ridgewood Road and moved away but am now back. Maplewood physically hasn't changed much over the years and it's very comforting.

Grandparents, Aunt and Uncle
Not sure if this belongs here or under local history, but... My grandfather Arthur Pearson was the caretaker at Memorial Park until the early 1950's. He and my grandmother lived in the caretakes's cottage in the park. I was perhaps 7 or so when my grandfather's employment ended, but do have many memories - especially of the Fourth of July circus and fireworks - associated with the park. My aunt and uncle - Ruth and Harry Cope - lived on Jacoby Street in a house built by my uncle, a self-employed plumber. Their property bordered on Olympic Park at the rear where there was also a small brook. My Aunt Ruth worked in the Maplewood town office for many, many years as, I believe, a secretary in the mayor's office. As far as I know, I have no more living relatives in NJ and have lived in Maine since 1962. I would be pleased to hear from anyone who has any recollection of my long-ago Maplewood relatives.

Maplewood what a charming town!
decided that before meeting them, I would wander around Maplewood Village which I have not done in a long time. Not that I am not familiar with the village, as I once owned a retail business there for 13 years. I spent many a day in that lovely 4 block village but since have not returned for a leasurely stroll. I'm always too busy running from house to house. Well today, I did wander around and many things about the village have not changed. That's a good thing. Lots of people about, walking from the local spots. It's great to have everything you need in walking distance. That's the one thing I missed when moving from NYC to the burbs. But the conveniences are there in Maplewood. Walk from King's supermarket to the great Fish market that always has fresh fish. If you can't wait to pick up your order, the fish market with deliver to your home. A few steps away, you can catch the lastest movie and say hello the the same friendly employees that have been there for years. I stopped and had breakfast at the local dinner where the food is good, plentiful and very reasonable. Many of the same shops remain with some new additions. All offerring quality products at reasonable pricing and many will gift wrap for free. People are all so friendly and even I who hasn't been there for some time, ran into familiar faces to greet. Oh, I almost forgot, where can you cross the street and the cars come to a complete stop and they are happy to do so for you? If you guessed Maplewood you're right! So if you have time, take a drive and enjoy a relaxing time exploring the village of Maplewood . I did.
