1997 | 1998 | 1999 | 2000 | 2001 | 2002 | 2003 | 2004 I just moved out to california about 3 years ago, I lived in maplewood my whole life, and I always come back to visit friends, and family. I'm 19 turning 20 next month, and I had the best of memories that will last forever, and I love the pictures, I can always look at them whenever I become home sick. Jessica Diak <jangel777@saintly.com> Placentia, CA USA - Wednesday, December 05, 2001 at 14:52:57 (EST) I was referred to the site by Mary Macdonald and am intriqued with it. As a third generation native of Maplewood, I had misgivings retirering to the Eastern Shore of VA. Though I love the Chesapeake bay-country life, I miss good old Maplewood. My Greatgrandfather was the Caretaker for the Asher B. Durand estate. My dad related how his dad sat on the station coach, with his dad, picking up Asher & party from the Train station in the 1860's & 1870's The caretakers house once was on the corner of Durand RD & Ridgewood next to ST George's church. He bought part of the Timothy Ball property in 1879 where his son (my Grandad) started "GEFKENS FLOWERS". I'm kind of proud to hear our name mentioned in some recollections of the town and sometimes feel like a traitor for leaving. I take comfort in hearing rave reviews, from new aqquaintences, about Maplewood. I had to leave to realize how well known and unique Maplewood is. Fondly, Ray Gefken Ray Gefken CHS 1956 <raygef@visi.net> Exmore, VA USA 23350 - Friday, November 23, 2001 at 08:33:30 (EST) Hi: I lived in Maplewood from 1939 to 1986, with 4 years out in an apartment when first married to John Rountree, who grew up in South Orange. My mom was in the first class to graduate from the "new" CHS in 1928, John and I graduated in 1957 and all five of our children went all through the schools there when we lived on Maplewood Avenue. When one grows up in such a fantastic place, one developes VERY high standards for towns in which to live, and there AREN'T very many places that can measure up to Maplewood. How many people do you know who can return to their home town and find it even better than it was all those years ago! Maplewoodians, past and present have ALOT to be grateful for. Danny Raymond <jamitor@aol.com> Orlando, FL USA - Thursday, November 01, 2001 at 13:33:01 (EST) Hi! In June 2001 I came over from Germany to spend a year in the USA. I`m working as an AuPair ( Nanny) and the last four months showed me, that my decision to spend a year in a foreign country I`ve never visited before, far away from my family and friends, was the right one. I kind of grew up ( but still, there`s a long way to go ) and learning that Americans are so friendly and nice helped me a lot to forget my homesickness and fear and go out, making new friends. I`m living with the McGee family on Parker Avenue and they really opened me a door into a whole new world. I really feel like part of their life, and they all became part of mine. Thank you guys ( Alex, Carolyn, Claire, Tom and Brandy). Also, I met great new friends, people that are very important for me by now, and the year is far from over. Sophie, I like you so much. I hope you stay like you are and we stay friends forever - see you next summer in Germany. There are a lot more persons to thank for making my "new" life so much better, so I think I`ll write back a couple of times. But I want to finish with saying that Maplewood is a great town with so many nice people and I can`t imagine another place to live my year in USA. I have many fond memories of Maplewood--skating on the duck pond, 4th of July (best celebration anywhere), walking to school on Kendall Ave., cutting through Gefken's Florist to get to the park, the Timothy Ball House, sunday school at Morrow Memorial, spending the summers at the Maplewood Pool, neighborhood block parties on Kendall Ave., picking up dad at the train station, fairs at Jefferson School, etc. I came back to visit Maplewood in 1999, and it hadn't changed a bit (just looked smaller)! It was a wonderful place to live, and I'm sure it still is. I was an au-pair in Maplewood from 1987 to 1988. It's almost a lifetime ago, but now it seems to me as if it was yesterday. I suppose no-one actually remembers me, but if so, just send me an e-mail. And even if some of the other girls from back then surfes into this site (Marion, Inga, Meike): I'm sorry that we lost contact. Mail me if you find this :-). My special greetings to Greg, Debbie, Cara and Devin. I had the time of my life when I was with you! Also "hello" to Dean if you ever happen to surf in! I lived with Sue and Mark Goodman as their nanny from May 99-00. I love this town, the people, and the pizza!!! They sure don't do Pizza out here in the west like they do there. I have been back twice to visit, but as a poor college student at the University of Utah (home of the Winter Games..) I can only afford so much! I hope any of you reading this that know me will e-mail and say hi!!! Maplewood will always hold a sweet spot in my heart. Does anyone remember Mrs. Salazar? She was my second grade teacher at Jefferson and in her class she taught us Spanish. She was very kind to me and would be invited to dinner at her house. I can still almost taste the homemade spaghetti sauce that she would make. I still try to duplicate it to this day. I wonder if anyone knows if she is still alive. She would probably be in her 60's or 70 yrs old by now. I seem to recall that she lived with her brother and block or so behind Jefferson school. The year I was in second grade would have to be about 1960 or 1961. Thanks. I miss Maplewood - I haven't been there since about 1974. Used to ride the train into NYC to work. Miss the old Erie Lackawanna. I remember riding on the train in the morning and we'd stop at "Orange" station and the guys that were building the World Trade Center would hop on the train to go to work. There were about 20-30 of them and seemed to be of French descent. Nice to have a website to come and look at the place now. Really hasn't changed much at all. Like you are stopped in time. I visit your website everyday. It is a wonderful source of information for me and a testament to what can be accomplished in a close knit community. Also, the website is, visually, quite pretty. I've seen just about every municipal and community bulletin board on the internet. Yours is the best by far. P.S. -- The photographs are beautiful. Maplewood will always be home.....and you will always be my friends..... Sue Hunter <luckystr52@aol.com> York, Pa USA - Friday, June 22, 2001 at 23:31:30 (EDT) I first admired Maplewood as a kid living in South Orange. I graduated CHS in '61, left for College, and Law School and always thought of Maplewood as a town that I would want to raise my children in. In any event, we bought our home in '70 and are still in it with numerous additions. My two kids graduated CHS. I even decided to practice law in town. Interestingly, I'm not the only one here that has these kind of roots in Maplewood. There are many of us who have stayed or come back. Has the place stayed the same? In many ways. Yet, if anything, it is a more dynamic town. While retaining its old "atmosphere", traditions and community values, Maplewood's citizens are now more diverse in ethnicity, race, religion and sexual preference- much to its betterment. It is a very welcoming town. Considering its proximity to Manhattan (25 minutes by NJT Direct)and its adjacent urban neighbors, Maplewood continues to be an oasis, and the very antithesis of the image that uninformed outsiders conjure up about N.J. Our tax situation, notwithstanding, Maplewood is still a great, unique, town in which too live. For all its faults -- and my faults -- Maplewood was a great place to grow up. I can still remember the 12 o'clock whistle on Saturdays, Maplewood center, playing baseball in Memorial Park, and hockey on the "rink" until all hours -- the skate house. Enough rambling. I attended Clinton school, SOJH, and Columbia class of '76. Since college, I moved to Alaska where I pursued my dream of the frontier and living closer to the edge but my mind still wanders back to Maplewood when I think of home. It's ben a number of years since I last visited but it seemed pretty much like I last left it. Mr C is still the best soccer coach in the world and Maplewood village still captures my childhood imagination. It had the 5 and 10 store with the horse ride in front, the hardware store with the smell of wood and of course Pearson's Mill not too far away. Maplewood village is still the greatest and you might pause and appreciate it for the way it brings your community together. I look forward to my future in Alaska but I will always treasure my Maplewood roots. Joe Riordan <joe.riordan@alaska.com> Anchorage, AK USA - Friday, December 08, 2000 at 01:38:34 (EST) Hello. I remember singing the "Hallelujah Chorus" in Town Hall, dancing for the cast of "Sarafina," the band competition when Dunia called "Attention" and Dan called "Mark Time," and running through the sprinklers on the golf course (being chased off by the Green Hornet). I so took this place for granted during my misfit girlhood. Oh well, I'm a happily married newspaper editor now, and Maplewood is as beautiful as ever. I noticed that many messages in the Guest Book relate to trying to connect with old classmates. there is a great website - classmates.com that might be valuable in your search for lost classmates. Good Luck - John John Harvey <harveyclan@home.com> Maplewood, NJ USA - Wednesday, August 23, 2000 at 23:40:13 (EDT) No one ever really leaves Maplewood. How can you when you were part of Clinton School, South Orange Jr. High, and Columbia? Grunings, the football games, the Sweet 16 parties, the neighborhood, friends, and of course- WHO COULD EVER FORGET THE TEACHERS? Yes Ed, I remember your Dad. Mr. Reuther fixed a broken heel on my shoe one day. He asked me if me name was Lucille(LooseHeel)!!!! Thanks for the memories. Elissa Arencibia <Shadow918@aol.com> pembroke pines, fl USA - Tuesday, July 25, 2000 at 14:36:23 (EDT) Hi, grew up in Maplewood, lived on Florida St., graduated in 1959. Would love to hear from anyone in my class, or any other class, who remembers me. Now live in California, before California it was Nebraska for 12 years. My husband is Pat Idler, lived on Maplewood Ave., went to Seton Hall Prep, and Seton Hall University. Adelay (Bopp) Idler <pidler@earthlink.net> Elk Grove, CA USA - Saturday, July 08, 2000 at 17:15:21 (EDT) me flamboyant/him stern and conservative. I thought I almost killed him right there in class. I drew a circular house, with no interior doors........hanging beads mind you (very "in" at the time) and he got sooooooo mad (no doors on the bathroom either) I reduced him to sputtering...and he just walked into his office and sat down. Mumbling something about why women shouldn't be allowed near a draft table! LOL! Well Ed, there is a God. Fast forward 30 something years later..... Your father made a profound impact on my life. I am a RE Developer here in the Bay Area. I have designed almost all of my projects, and when I don't, I am the lead designer that works w/the Architects. I am self-taught on CAD, and I have been nominated to win an award for a house I designed called "WindRiver House". Yes, it's bizarre (of course), but very beautiful. There is an artificial river running thru the house, (and foundations!) and licensed/seasoned Architects ooh and ahh over it. The bathrooms do have doors. I've had to compromise something! I don't know if your dad is alive or not, but he had a profound impact on my life....obviously. He was very "forward thinking" for his time...allowing a "girl" to enter his very macho den (sometimes I think he had second thoughts) but non the less, my love of designing spaces, figuring out how things work, are directly because of this man. He taught me how to see in 3D. I took a drafting clas w/engineers 11 years ago, again the only women.......and again laboring over widgets......the week we were let loose to create the object in 3D from one view.....all of the guys..just were stuck. I aced the class. Thanks to your dad. Also, I aced handwriting because he would become infuritaed if it wasn't just so..... Wow. I was just talking about him the other night at Starbuck's. About the beads...etc..... I hope this story touches your life somehow, becuase your dad deffinitely touched mine.
Warmly,
About Mr. Reuters from SOJH! Oh my God! Mr Reuters! I have the best story about him. With a wonderful ending. I was the 1st female in his drafting class. Walked-out/Sat in...etc.....whatever. Fought w/Mr. Parr...gave him all this feminist babble...out of sheer misery, he let me in. Mr. Reuters was willing to give me a try. I drove him nuts. I wanted to design buildings/rooms, he was trying to get me to draft Alexandra Dorian <alexkane@aol.com> San Jose, CA USA - Thursday, June 22, 2000 at 05:52:42 (EDT) Hi! I must also include the chat page, which for some unknown reason also suffers from the same condition known as lack of use. Having moved from town only a short time ago, depending on Maplewood On-Line for information right now is not an option, guess we'll have to depend on the News-Record on-line source for that. But miracles do happen, so let's see what happens in the future. Maplewood, as always, does rise to meet any challange. I received this information about this site today from Larry Stone, one of my best friends when we lived in Maplewood in the 50's. We graduated from CHS,1960 and have kept in touch all these years. I used to live on Ridgewood Terrace (13)across the street from Sue Denman, what fine memories! In the "site" I haven't found anything about Boy Scout Troop 2. Is it still together? Growing up in Maplewood was great. Going to "Grunnings" or up to Don's drive in or Curly's in the village. My two brothers (Russ & Bob)and I all worked at the Maplewood Theatre. After growing up in Maplewood, and my father being the judge here when he was killed in an Airline Accident in 1958, I still vividly remember many of the good times we had. My brother, Grant, and my sister, Holly, still reminise quite frequently about all the good friends and times we enjoyed here. After retiring as an Airline Captain, I have continued to reside in Texas, which has been my home for the last 30 years. I still think about Maplewood quite often, and miss the friends, experiences, and the delightful setting of the town. Thank you for providing a wonderful website for all of us to enjoy. David C. Thanks to Peter Powers for letting me know about it. I actually grew up in South Orange (Vose Ave), and graduated in the CHS class of '67. There were 2 'jeff williams' in that class; I'm the one from stage crew, Cheudreuts band, beer bashes, etc. I moved to CA in '68. Haven't been back to NJ since 1970 or so, and quickly lost touch with most NJ friends after that, having only recently reconnected with a few of them (via the wonders of the Internet, mostly). Found a few familiar names among this site's CHS grads lists, though, and will no doubt get in touch. Still wondering whatever happened to Rise Blumenschein, Jamie Coughlin, Randee and Lauri Getz, Larry Curcio (all CHS grads from '67, '68, or '69) or really any of the other folks I hung out with back then (can't remember all the names - too many beer bashes, I guess). Can anybody help out?
