About Alexander:

ALEXANDER KARIOTIS (vocals) Exposed to rock n roll at a young age, Alexander was only 9 when he lost both his eyebrows setting off homemade pyrotechnics for his big brother's band. It was love at first . . . light? He quickly formed his first rock band, The Nodes, and frequently opened for Gambler (EMI America), his brother's rock band in Chicago.

After hearing Lucianno Pavarotti sing at Ravinia, Alex was so inspired that he auditioned and won a scholarship to study opera at the Mannes Conservatory of Music in New York City. He kept his hand in pop music by flying back and forth to LA to sing back-up at the Roxy and record with his brother at the famous Warner Bros. Studios in L.A. and Sun Studios in Memphis.

After graduating form Mannes, he moved to LA where he received a full scholarship from UCLA to continue his studies in opera. While there he also played guitar for a few gigs with the Tokens, (The Lion Sleeps Tonight) and wrote songs with his brother for Wrestle Rock!

Soon after that Alex moved to Europe to study with Pavarotti's teacher, Arrigo Pola, and the renowned operatic tenor, Gianni Raimondi. He was a semi finalist in the International Enrico Caruso voice competition for young tenors in Milan.

Alex has performed at the Berlin Philharmonic with the St Hedwigs Orchester, the
Collegium Orchester, the Hohenfels Orchester, and a live radio broadcast for Radio
Brandenburg Berlin. Alex has had numerous solo concerts in LA, Chicago and
Avery Fischer Hall at Lincoln Center. His opera roles to date include Rodolfo
in La Boheme, Cavaradossi in Tosca, Canio in Pagliacci and Nemorino in L' Elisir
D'Amore, to name a few.

While in Europe, Alex was offered a publishing contract for many of his
rock/dance tunes with Warner Chappell/Touch & Go Music. He then decided to return
to America and work on fusing his two passions; rock and opera. Northwestern gave him yet another full scholarship to do his Masters in Voice, and he received stunning reviews for his role as Tony Candolino in Master Class by Terrence McNally. Alex appeared in both the Chicago production, directed by Peter Amster, and the Columbia Artists production in Toronto with Elizabeth Ashley, directed by Leonard Foglia.

In the midst of this, Alex began working on his new style of music. Writing this music
inspired him to create his one-man show, Holdin' On, which premiered at the Laurie
Beechman Theater on 42nd st. in NYC. It has since been performed to great acclaim and SRO houses Off Broadway at the Zipper Theater and the Belt Theater, as well as theaters in New Jersey and LA. It is now under consideration by several theaters around the country and is being directed and dramaturged by Lynn Thomson, dramaturg of the Broadway hit RENT, on and Off Broadway.

Alex and his music are unique in that he is truly a crossover artist. He has lived in both worlds and unites the fans of both of these genres with his magnetic personality and the innovative music he writes.

Billy Jonas's website: http://www.billyjonas.com

About Billy:

A Billy Jonas performance is an explosion of energy. In singalongs, bangalongs, whisperalongs, as well as improvised songs, his primary instrument is the audience. Everyone becomes part of a performance that reaches out and ". . . touches even the most hardened of hearts." (Fayetteville Morning News)

Concerts begin with a simple "tuning" of the audience; from there a whimsical trajectory carries listeners through stories of life, love, and triumph over 'Murphy's Law.' Jonas' original pieces are played on fanciful "industrial re-percussion" instruments made from found objects. He sings in a clear tenor voice; his guitar work is adventurous, alternately percussive and lyrical.

Jonas' heartwarming work has been enjoyed across North America since 1987. Previously a member of the highly acclaimed duo, "The Billys," he has been featured at prestigious festivals and venues nationwide (see selected venues). Jonas has shared stages with some of the world's favorite acoustic artists, including Patti Larkin, Ani DiFranco, David Wilcox, Richard Thompson, and Pete Seeger.

Jonas' latest CD, "Get Real," for adult/general audiences, is his studio follow-up to "Life So Far". From matters of the heart, to geo-political intrigue, "Get Real" invites the listener to climb into a "percussion-rich" universe full of sonic exploration and emotional adventurousness. "Get Real" is filled with homemade and recycled object instruments, as well as a host of more traditional sounding instruments (guitar, bass, Middle Eastern & African percussion), and LOTS of voices!

Jonas' CD "Life So Far," sparkles with unique perspectives and found sounds. Songs filled with hope, yearning, wonder, and wisdom include special guests David Wilcox, Glen Velez, Robert Moog (on Theramin), and Zimbabwe's Black Umfolosi voice and percussion choir.

In addition to his work with adult/general audiences, Jonas has generated an enthusiastic following for his family show. His CD "What Kind of Cat are You?!" caters to this audience, and received multiple awards including a First Place/Gold from AFIM (American Federation of Independent Musicians), and a Parent's Choice Gold.

Jonas also has released 2 video/dvd's for family/young audiences: "Everybody's in the Band!" and "Bangin' and Sangin.'" Both have garnered critical acclaim, including Parents Choice Awards; "Bangin' and Sangin'" received a New York Times "Best" listing.

Billy Jonas' performances will inspire, inform, and enlighten. His work is born out of respect and reverence, and seeks to honor the creative energy in everyone.
About GrooveLily:

Rock Band? Musical Theater? The Best Of Both.

New York City trio GrooveLily inhabits that contemporary space where creative musicians ignore the boundaries laid down by words like rock, folk, jazz, and pop. Intelligent original songs with no shortage of wit connect lush musical textures and soaring vocals with the blazing sixstring electric violin of Valerie Vigoda, the lightning-fingered piano of Brendan Milburn, and the joyful drums of Gene Lewin. With backgrounds in classical music, musical theater, jazz, and rock, the three members of GrooveLily are making a new music that’s all their own. Buoyed by the success of their critically-acclaimed holiday concert-musical “Striking 12,” GrooveLily looks forward to making your acquaintance.

Valerie Vigoda, electric violinist and singer, is the founding member of GrooveLily. Originally from McLean, VA, Valerie is a classically-trained musician, honors graduate of Princeton University, and former Army lieutenant. She has toured the world with Cyndi Lauper (opening for Tina Turner and Cher), Joe Jackson and the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. She founded GrooveLily (originally “The Valerie Vigoda Band”) in 1994, with a critically-acclaimed CD called “Inhabit My Heart.” Dirty Linen Magazine wrote:“to call Valerie Vigoda talented barely seems to do her justice. She has a great voice, is an intelligent lyricist ... and an ace violinist. Methinks we’ll hear more of her.” Winner of a 2006 Jonathan Larson Performing Arts Foundation Award for excellence in writing for the theater, along with her longtime collaborator and husband Brendan Milburn, Valerie is delighted to be spending less time in the GrooveLily van, and more time creating new projects with her ban
dmates.

Brendan Milburn (keyboards/vocals) graduated from Pomona College and NYU's MFA program in Musical Theatre Writing. He does a lot of arranging for GrooveLily, and he’s an accomplished record producer as well. He often yearns for his native San Francisco. Seth Rogovoy wrote: “Milburn was a deft pianist, his nimble fingerwork doing double-duty as the band’s bassist and provider of its harmonic foundation, delivered with the jazzy sophistication of Steely Dan’s Donald Fagen and the rock and roll theatrics of Billy Joel.” Brendan's music and/or lyrics have been/will be featured in a growing number of off/on-Broadway shows, and he's always on the lookout for new projects/productions which will add more slashes (“/”) to his bio/credits.

Gene Lewin plays the drums and sings, and hails from Princeton, NJ. Like many of his heroes (Jack DeJohnette, Russ Kunkel, Vinnie Colaiuta), Gene joyfully blurs the lines between jazz and rock, supporting and complementing the music but unafraid to instigate when the time is right. After graduating from Princeton University, Gene earned a Master’s degree from the Manhattan School of Music. He has toured with Audra McDonald and has appeared on CDs with George Coleman, John Patitucci, and many others. “His gift lies in his frenzied dynamo attack of cymbals and skins. Think Tony Williams sits in with Weather Report.” (Mark Corroto, All About Jazz)

Blurb from the Daily Record:
The Brooklyn-based musical trio GrooveLily earned a lot of New Jersey fans in 2006 when it scored and performed in a unique production of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream," which ran at both Princeton University's McCarter Theatre and Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn.

Saturday at 8 p.m., the band makes a rare Garden State concert appearance at Maplewood Middle School. Tickets are $22 for this general admission show, which will feature an all-request set selected by the band's Petal Pushers fan club.

"The show is something of a thank-you to our fans, and we're looking forward to getting back to New Jersey," said violinist Valerie Vigoda, who will share the stage with her husband, keyboardist Brendan Milburn, and drummer Gene Lewin. All three members sing as well.

GrooveLily gigs are rare these days, mostly because "Midsummer" led to several exciting musical theater projects. The most high-profile job was writing original songs for Disney's stage adaptation of the animated feature "Toy Story," which premiered April 10 on the Disney cruise ship Disney Wonder.

"We flew down for the premiere and it was very exciting," Vigoda said. "Disney and Pixar have been great to work with, although we had never written for committee before."

Other theatrical projects include Vigoda and Millburn's "Sleeping Beauty Awakes"; another project Vigoda describes as "my PowerPoint musical"; and GrooveLily's holiday musical, "Striking 12," which has successfully toured and been staged off-Broadway.

"We were starting to burn out touring by ourselves in a van," said Vigoda, who has a 21/2-year-old son, Mose. "GrooveLily is still very important, but it's been wonderful (working in theater). We enjoy the collaborative nature of theater and the support and infrastructure you don't get when you're on the road in a rock band."

Jon profiled in the NY Times:
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/04/business/04flier.html

About Jon:

With the release of his new album Let It Go, singer, songwriter and pianist Jon Regen demonstrates why he has been called the ‘Miracle Child From New York.’ His music is simply unforgettable.

Featuring Andy Summers of The Police, Martha Wainwright, and other renowned guests, Let It Go is a breakout masterpiece of jazz-influenced pop that effortlessly combines Regen’s pianistic prowess with his unmistakable voice as a singer and songwriter.

“I’ve been searching for a way to tell my own story, both as a singer/songwriter and as a piano player,” Regen says from his home in New York City. “I’ve made jazz records, and pop records, but never one that managed to meld the two into something that represents both sides of my split personality. On this one, everything just fell into place.”

Produced by multi-instrumentalist Brad Albetta (Martha Wainwright, Teddy Thompson), and mixed by legendary British producer John Porter (Ryan Adams, BB King, The Smiths), Let It Go feels both resoundingly fresh and reassuringly familiar. The album features 12 newly-penned Regen originals, and guest appearances by some of today’s most innovative artists.

“I wanted each song to tell its own story,” Regen says. ‘Close To Me’ is about a girl that took my breath away – I was literally in physical pain over the break-up. Andy (Summers) came-in, and without a word, he played those haunting guitar lines that totally capture the longing in the song. Music is like that – it cuts to the chase.”

On ‘I Come Undone,’ singer Martha Wainwright guests. “I wrote that song after losing a friend of mine,” Regen says. “Martha’s voice really brings-out the heartbreak – the emptiness that lingers. She is one in a million.”

Other album cameos include cellist Julia Kent (Norah Jones, Antony & The Johnsons), drummer Matt Johnson (Jeff Buckley, Rufus Wainwright), guitarist Jimmy Vivino (Late Night with Conan O’Brien), and singer Kami Thompson, (daughter of famed songsmiths Richard and Linda Thompson, and sister of musician Teddy).

Almost as surprising as the roster of A-list guest artists, is the fact that Regen recorded Let It Go live in the studio, singing and playing piano in real-time. With the exception of backing vocals and a few instrumental overdubs, everything on the record was recorded in one pass.

“We cut the record live,’ Regen says. “I came-up playing jazz, where you didn’t have the time or the luxury to redo a vocal or bring in a different band. And so that mantra of getting it right the first time has always stuck with me.”

“The other thing is,” Regen continues, “I was a piano player first, so it’s almost physically impossible for me to sing without sitting at the piano – my body just won’t do it! So it’s really out of necessity that I record everything live – I guess I’m old-school in that regard.”

Regen will tour in-support of Let It Go throughout 2008, with solo and band dates across the US, Europe, and Asia.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT LET IT GO...

**** FOUR STARS. It's hard not to be drawn in by Regen's emotional ballad "Better Days" and the bittersweet "Photographs of You." Recommended.
ALL MUSIC GUIDE

Tracks range from the Randy Newmanesque "It’s Alright By Me", which sounds like a strong contender for the next Pixar movie soundtrack, to a brace of tunes featuring guitarist Andy Summers - the hypnotic "Close To Me" and "Finding My Way Back to Me" (whose opening riff sounds like a very close relation of "Don´t Stand So Close To Me"). Regen displays an impressively wide pianistic touch, hitting the piano so hard in the title track you can almost feel the vibration of the strings, caressing the notes in the touching ballad "Better Days".
JAZZWISE

It’s Regen’s own writing and crooning that carry the day here: “Better Days,” “Disappear” and the title tune make the most impact with no “name” assistance whatsoever. Regen’s proven himself a master of jazz and pop...
HIGH BIAS

Radio-friendly pop tunes, featuring rich lyrics, cool and honest vocals, and grooving piano and organ playing...Like (Bruce) Hornsby, Regen has facility, hipness, and the confidence to pull it off.
KEYBOARD MAGAZINE

Regen comes out swinging with the album's title track and continues to impress with songs that include "Close to Me" and "Finding My Way Back to Me."
CHARLESTON POST & COURIER

Perfectly poised contemporary pop...LET IT GO is another significant milestone in Regen’s burgeoning career, and represents a consolidation of his composing aptitude and an inspired indicator of his progressive pianistic skills. It’s also solid proof that contemporary pop can be witty and emotional, without once slipping into awkward mawkishness.
MALAYSIAN STAR

BIOGRAPHY

Jon Regen was raised in Maplewood, New Jersey. Originally self-taught on his family’s aging grand piano at the age of five, Regen would lead his first professional group while still in his early teens.

He studied piano and music theory at The Eastman School of Music, and The University of Miami, eventually relocating back to his home state of New Jersey to apprentice world-renowned pianist Kenny Barron, at the Mason Gross School of The Arts at Rutgers University. Regen would graduate with a Bachelor of Music degree, and quickly move to New York City, where his strong melodic and rhythmic approach to the piano would not go unnoticed.

Regen was named Runner-Up in the Great American Jazz Piano Competition, and was also chosen as one of only 2,000 pianists worldwide to hold the title of Steinway Artist. Bassist Kyle Eastwood asked Regen to anchor his touring band, where Regen remained until 2001, leaving to accompany jazz icon Jimmy Scott. Regen spent nearly three years alongside Scott, touring, recording, and performing across the U.S., Europe, and Asia. The New York Sun would write of Regen’s work with Scott, ‘Although the British press has described Mr. (Jamie) Cullum as "Sinatra in sneakers," he is a long way from having a Sinatra or Nat Cole-level vocal instrument. Likewise, he has less technique as a pianist than, say, Jimmy Scott's prodigious accompanist, Jon Regen.’

Jon Regen Trio – Live at The Blue Note, Regen’s debut CD, was released on Half-Note Records to critical acclaim in 2000. JazzTimes called him ‘a gifted pianist-composer whose career merits tracking.’ His follow-up recording, Tel Aviv was greeted with the same industry-wide praise upon its release in 2001. High Bias proclaimed; ‘A protégé of jazz great Kenny Barron, Jon Regen is a pianist of great lyrical gifts, using his masterful technique to caress a melody like a lover strokes the object of his desire. The three-part 'Tel Aviv Suite' is a marvel of collective improvisation and jazz piano melodicism.’

In 2004, Regen released Almost Home, a seven-song EP of all-original material that showcased his previously hidden talents as a singer and songwriter. Critics around the globe heralded the new music with unanimous praise; All Music Guide awarded it Four Stars, and CD Baby proclaimed ‘Regen has woven a tapestry of adult contemporary pop and jazz that reflects on the integration of intelligent songwriting with the elemental and unbridled force of the human spirit.’ The Danube Courier dubbed Regen ‘the Miracle Child from New York, ’ and High Bias called the EP a collection of ‘solid tunes with instantly-appealing melodies and soulful vocals.’

Regen’s new album Let It Go was released in the U.S. in late 2007, and in Japan on Sandfish Records in January 2008.

In addition to his performing and recording work, Regen is an accomplished freelance journalist. His work can currently be seen in the pages of KEYBOARD Magazine, available in print and online at:

The Button Accordion and Piano from Munnelly and sensitive, driving Guitar and cittern from Masure with the voice of Helen Flaherty that was described by Celtic Beat Music Magazine as "musical poetry" fuses together to give a very unique dynamic, and harmonically rich sound.

Three of Europe's top Celtic musicians, the members of the trio of Munnelly Flaherty & Masure, will perform in the Underground Concert Series at the Maplewood Memorial Library, 51 Baker Street, in Maplewood on Saturday, April 12 at 8:00 PM. Well-known on the European concert & festival circuit, the group made their U.S. Debut to popular & critical acclaim in September 2007 at Pennsylvania's prestigious Celtic Classic festival.

The group features multi-award winning Irish button accordionist, piano player, and composer David Munnelly, who performed & recorded with The Chieftains for four years. He has performed several times at The Kennedy Center, and other major venues in the United States & Europe, such as the Royal Concert Hall in Edinburgh, Milwaukee Irish Fest, Celtic Fest Chicago, and more. He regularly tours the United States with his larger group, the David Munnelly Band, which has a large & enthusiastic following, especially in Chicago.

In Munnelly Flaherty & Masure, David is joined by his close friends & compatriots in musical conviviality, much loved Scottish singer Helen Flaherty and Belgian guitar/ cittern virtuoso Philip Masure.

Munnelly Flaherty & Masure's music is a blend of traditional Irish, Scottish, & continental European Celtic music, with world music influences, and features beautiful traditional songs and spirited instrumental selections. Their music has been called, "Inspiring" by music critics. Philadelphia's Irish Edition states, "Every time I listen to their music, I want to hear more!" Bill Margeson of Chicago's Irish American News states, "Outstanding! A creative force!"

Munnelly Flaherty & Masure have been featured in America on NPR and on radio in Ireland, Britain, France, and Europe. They have performed at the Dranouter Festival (largest in Europe), Brussels Jazz & Folk Festival, Liverpool Irish Festival, Labadoux Festival, and the Leopoldsburg Cultural Center.
