The Button Accordion and Piano from Munnelly and sensitive, driving Guitar and cittern from Masure with the voice of Helen Flaherty that was described by Celtic Beat Music Magazine as "musical poetry" fuses together to give a very unique dynamic, and harmonically rich sound.
Three of Europe's top Celtic musicians, the members of the trio of Munnelly Flaherty & Masure, will perform in the Underground Concert Series at the Maplewood Memorial Library, 51 Baker Street, in Maplewood on Saturday, April 12 at 8:00 PM. Well-known on the European concert & festival circuit, the group made their U.S. Debut to popular & critical acclaim in September 2007 at Pennsylvania's prestigious Celtic Classic festival.
The group features multi-award winning Irish button accordionist, piano player, and composer David Munnelly, who performed & recorded with The Chieftains for four years. He has performed several times at The Kennedy Center, and other major venues in the United States & Europe, such as the Royal Concert Hall in Edinburgh, Milwaukee Irish Fest, Celtic Fest Chicago, and more. He regularly tours the United States with his larger group, the David Munnelly Band, which has a large & enthusiastic following, especially in Chicago.
In Munnelly Flaherty & Masure, David is joined by his close friends & compatriots in musical conviviality, much loved Scottish singer Helen Flaherty and Belgian guitar/ cittern virtuoso Philip Masure.
Munnelly Flaherty & Masure's music is a blend of traditional Irish, Scottish, & continental European Celtic music, with world music influences, and features beautiful traditional songs and spirited instrumental selections. Their music has been called, "Inspiring" by music critics. Philadelphia's Irish Edition states, "Every time I listen to their music, I want to hear more!" Bill Margeson of Chicago's Irish American News states, "Outstanding! A creative force!"
Munnelly Flaherty & Masure have been featured in America on NPR and on radio in Ireland, Britain, France, and Europe. They have performed at the Dranouter Festival (largest in Europe), Brussels Jazz & Folk Festival, Liverpool Irish Festival, Labadoux Festival, and the Leopoldsburg Cultural Center.
