LWV Presents Film BY THE PEOPLE
Date: October 18th, 2006
Time: 7:00pm
Information: By the People, a new behind-the scenes documentary of who and what it really takes to put on an American election, will be shown at the Maplewood Public Library on Baker Street by the League of Women Voters of Maplewood and South Orange. The screening will be on Wednesday, October 18th from 7 to 9 PM in the downstairs meeting room and the film's director, Malindi Fickle will be there to answer questions about the film after the screening.

In By the People, Ms. Fickle, armed with a storyteller?s sensibility and a biting sense of humor, lets the words and emotions speak for themselves as the film?s subjects battle against time, lack of resources and political obstacles to get the polls open and the votes counted.

By the People unfolds over the 11 days leading up to the 2004 Presidential election. It follows a young County Clerk in Marion County, Indianapolis, her small crew of government employees, and dedicated volunteer poll workers, as they race to prepare for one of the most anticipated and divided elections in American history. Unflinchingly honest and unexpectedly funny, the film captures average Americans of all political stripes working side by side to insure that everyone in Indianapolis-including the disabled and prisoners awaiting trial-are allowed to exercise their fundamental right to vote.

The film?s premiere was at the Jackson Hole Film Festival in June. Later this year, By the People will be broadcast on public television nationwide and then available on video and DVD

Admission is free.
