Feb. 2, 2013 to March 24, 2013
Opening Reception date and time: Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013 2 PM - 6 PM
Emma Amos, renowned artist and former Rutgers professor, is nationally and internationally acclaimed. Her work is included in the collections of MOMA, NJ State Museum, and the Newark Museum and prestigious private collections.
Her art, which can be viewed as societal and social commentary, often combines printmaking and textiles. Some paintings are bordered with African fabrics and her own quilting or weavings and have been seen as a connecting link to European tapestries and the African diaspora.
Ms. Amos has a diverse range of inspiration including Matisse, Gauguin, Picasso, New Yorker cartoons, Romare Bearden, Kente cloth.
Interviewed for the Smithsonian archives, she said, “I don’t want to be segregated into a black community of artists. I don’t think it’s important the color of the artist. I think the color of his work is important. And I think his work is the important thing.”
