Peripheral Vascular Disease(PVD)affects an estimated 8-10 million people in America and is most common in post-menopausal women, men over age 50, people with diabetes and cigarette smokers. The disease is caused by arteriosclerosis, a hardening of the blood vessels that carry nutrients to the legs, feet and upper extremities. Individual with PVD are at greater risk for heart attack, stroke and loss of limbs, yet awareness among the general public regarding diagnosis, treatment and prevention of this disease is extremely low.
If you are a smoker; have high cholesterol; have diabetes; have moderate to high blood pressure; are physically inactive; have a family history of heart or vascular disease; or other factors that include weight and age you may be at high risk for developing PVD.
